Diabetes Education Program
at United General Hospital

Learn to take control and stay healthy
Diabetes affects many parts of your life, but you can take control and protect your health. The Diabetes Education Program at United General Hospital can show you how to:
  • Choose foods wisely.
  • Be physically active.
  • Manage your medication.
  • Monitor your glucose.
Our program is designed for anyone with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes, Insulin Resistance/Metabolic Syndrome and Gestational Diabetes.

Learn About Nutrition
People with diabetes do not need to eat special foods. Your meal plan can include breads, cereals, rice, and grains; fruits and vegetables; meat and meat substitutes; dairy products; and fats. Making wise food choices will help you stay at a healthy weight, and keep your glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol under control. Our Educators will show you how to choose foods wisely through interesting classes, lively discussions and helpful demonstrations.

Learn About Exercise

Physical activity is an important part of diabetes management. In our program you will learn how exercise can keep your weight down, help insulin work better and protect your heart and lungs. We will also show you how it can reduce stress and give you more energy.

Learn About Your Medication
Whether you use pills, injections or other medicines for your diabetes, we can help you manage and monitor them. We’ll also help you understand how what you eat and when you eat affect how your diabetes medicines work.

Learn to Check Your Blood Sugar

You will want to know how well you are taking care of your diabetes. The best way to find out is to check your blood to see how much glucose is in it. Too much or too little glucose may mean you need a change in your meal plan, exercise plan, or medicine. Our Educators will show you how to use a blood glucose meter. Your health insurance or Medicare may pay for the supplies and equipment you need.

Getting Started
A referral from your physician is required for registration in the program. At your initial visit we will provide a complete overview of the program and tailor your classes to meet any special needs. We always encourage your questions and feedback.
